Slap Me Sideways!!!

I hadn't planned on putting up any post today. However, like many of you my readers might have, I saw this on Linda Ikeji's blog and couldn't resist the need to put up this post.

Basically, the story is that there is supposedly a White-Only Restaurant in Riverdock, Apapa, Lagos. The story in itself isn't what has got my goats now as much as the comments.

My Goodness!!! Are these the bunch of future leaders that our educational system in Nigeria has trained? Is this how they have been trained/influenced to think? Several comments implied that nothing was wrong with this.  You seriously mean to tell me that a group of foreign investors in YOUR country, blatantly tell you that you are not wanted/allowed based on your skin shade and you find nothing wrong with this? I mean, someone found it ridiculous that we want to eat Oyinbo food and wondered why we just aren't satisfied with our own indigenous food. Oh lord?! Some mothers really do have them! If at all any side-lining is to occur, shouldn't it be the other way round?

I recently read a report of something similar to this. The incident was said to have happened in Ghana and you know what the government did? They supposedly shut down the place. If you don't believe me, google "white only restaurant in Ghana" and see how many pages you end up with.

There are two things here,
1) The truth factor of the allegation is still pending, ie, we don't know if in fact, such restaurant exists in Apapa.

2) The Ghanian government could have only gotten confidence to shut down the said place WITH the backing of his people.

BUT, am working on a premise that this allegation is true so, really, Nigerians, you are ok with being sidelined in YOUR own country? Your argument is that you have no business eating oyinbo food and also that you can always open a "Black Only" restaurant, abi?

I am sad!!! I am weak!!! and I am even more depressed to think that in a few years from now, these (the commenters) will be the crop of people leading our country.

There is a whole lot to be said on this issue, but right about now, I am even too weak to conjure up my thoughts and put it into any meaningful prose.

Your thoughts please....or am I over-reacting.

  1. Oh man, i gotta go back and read that. I saw when she first posted the story but there weren't any comments yet. Nawa for those people o! It wouldn't surprise me if its true considering how many nasty stories we hear about how foreign entities come and mistreat the Nigerian workers. Not to mention the mess the oil companies have created in the Niger-Delta all these years, smh.

  2. I saw that too and was like why on earth would this be happening in this country? Don't we understand that this is just...wrong on so many levels? Lets confirm it first anyway. God help us all.

  3. Gosh...what kind of people are we breeding in this country?

I'm begining to think low self-esteem and ignorance on racial matters is as rife as corruption in this country

  4. true about the closure of the white only restaurant/club in Ghana, and this happened with the help of the citizens. So I think the best way will be to do the same in Nigeria if not there will be more of them in the near future.

  5. This is why i think myself a racism.I sometimes really hate whites. This is the reason i have decided never to settle in the UK or US or any European,Asian country. They are pure assholes. They are not smarter than us,they are not richer, they are not wiser...so what the heck is giving them the impression they are better than us?

  7. Everything is wrong with the world this days and truth be told we are not really breading a future class that is confident. Low self esteem would be rampant if you do not give the people an identity they can be proud of.
If true that restaurant should be shut down, i think the governor of Lagos state is a pretty reasonable man and the matter should be brought to his attention.

  8. wow,I sincerely hope this isn't true. If it is, they need to put tyres round anyone who supports this mess necks and set them on fire, Naija style.

in 2011?? This is ridiculous. How the hell did they get permission to open the place? In our own country??

  11. I'm unimpressed and actually finding it hard to comprehend. Doesn't make a bit of sense. In my own fatherland??? No sense at all.

  12. *sigh* If it were a Nigerian restaurant that restricts patronage to a certain class of its citizens, our ears would be deafened by the outcry. Sometimes, it feels like we have no idea which cause to fight!

  16. well, its sad that we see whites are superior beings. They are worshipped and adored here.If that story is true, then Nigerian leaders are to blame. They place no value on Nigerian, why should outsiders hold us in high esteem..smh
