Sometimes, It Is All About You.....

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
“The Road Not Taken” By Robert Frost….http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-road-not-taken/
I first came across this poem some years ago while still in High School/Secondary School. I dissected this poem for academic purpose then. But while musing earlier today, the poem came again to my subconscious without the academic side of it. The poem talks about a traveler at crossroads. He is confused as to which of the two ways to proceed. One road bears marks of wear, meaning, people have trodden on that road, while the other was not as trodden. He decides to take the road that bore lesser marks of wear (for reasons best known to him) and concludes by saying that that decision has made all the difference, in his life perhaps.
Life doesn’t always give us two choices, sometimes it is more than two which makes it all the more confusing. There are the popular routes, which friends, family, acquaintances and all have passed through. Of course, when you ask for directions from them, this is the only way they know, can vouch for and will give directions for. Each situation is unique. That Aduke* studied Medicine and has excelled doesn’t mean you will as well if you study Medicine. That Gloria* is into buying and selling of adire and has made tons of money doesn’t guarantee that you will not go into debt should you embark on the same venture.
When faced with situations that provide different options, most times, you cannot be sure of what will lie in the aftermath of each decision, you can only make projections. For all the people who give advice, that is all it is supposed to be, OPINIONS. The ultimate decision belongs to you to decide what to do at any point. Sometimes, the road more travelled by is better and at other times, the one less travelled by is the key. There is no manual I know of that tells in what situation to go for either, the prerogative is completely yours. This said, be pro-active about decision making! Do not sit there waiting for revelations. Talk, ask people (if need be), think actively, be ready to take responsibilities for your decisions and do not let others (or their situations) make decisions for you because tí ìdí bá bàjé, t'o ndì ló ń (Literally translates as “When the bombom/buttock spoils, it becomes the problem of the owner”).
Don’t forget to drop your 50cents/kobo, I always appreciate it.

By the way, M still hasn’t made the decision to let sleeping dogs lie, but I am making decisions to keep my actions in check, so that = no violence from me…She can talk talk talk for all I care…J

  1. Fingers are not equal.....GOD that created it knows why HE did so & i get irritated when people tend to compare forgetting that everybody came to this world with his /her destiny.
The key here is to know yourself & be content.

  2. At the end of the day, people have to do what is best for them, shikena. As long as they are honest with themselves and humane to those who are affected by their decisions.

  3. Just read the background in your earlier post. Your patience will pay off eventually. Besides, she will only continue her annoying ways if she sees that she is getting a reaction. No reaction and she starts to look and sound stupid.

  5. Great post..yes, everyone's path in life is different, our purposes and destinies separate..even for identical twins!
and the sooner people understand that, the better chance they stand at realizing their potentials.

As per your roomie, just do you! but also be sure not to write her off

  7. @Vanity, I am glad you like it. I am not sure about the regret though, I feel like it was an open-ended conclusion. It is ambiguous. But, what i like about poems is that it can be sen in different perspectives, within reason. Thanks for leaving a comment. Visit again soon...
